Acclimating your dog to the force dryer
Sharing with another owner
It's perfectly normal for dogs to need some time to get used to the dog dryer at first. Such a blowing machine can seem quite intimidating. Fortunately, you can teach your dog, step by step, that it's nothing to be afraid of. With these 6 tips, drying will become a relaxed and pleasant moment for both of you.
With these 6 tips, you'll easily blow away your dog's fears.
1. Start from a young age
The sooner they come into contact with the dog dryer, the sooner they will get used to it. For the first few days, only blow into the air and reward your dog if he remains calm.
If he doesn't stay calm? Then increase the distance. Only continue when your dog behaves normally and relaxed when the dog dryer is on in the same room.
2. Reward while drying
Use rewards when you are drying your dog. This will make it a pleasant moment.
First say "blow," briefly blow with the dog dryer on its lowest setting (on the body), and reward with a treat. Repeat this several times. This makes it predictable for your dog.
3. Build up slowly
Don't start with long drying sessions immediately, but build it up slowly. Only increase the power of the dog dryer when it's going perfectly well on the lowest setting and your dog shows no stress or fear.
If the dog walks away, just stay seated and wait until he comes back. Sometimes your dog needs a time-out. Therefore, always do the exercise with a loose dog.
Tip: you can remove the nozzle from most dryers. Then it blows softer. Also, gradually increase the power of the dryer. You can increase the distance between you and your dog if he still finds it scary.
4. Make your dog comfortable with loud noise
When a dryer is on high, it makes a loud noise when you blow close to its coat. Most dogs are startled by this. Make this noise by blowing the dryer against your hand and then rewarding the dog.
5. Demonstrate with another dog
Demonstrate dog drying with another dog that is already used to it. This way, your puppy will see that there's nothing to worry about.
6. Repeat drying regularly
You can use a dog dryer as often as you like. It's handy to use after every walk to blow the paws clean and dry.
Now you're all set to get started with your puppy. Good luck!
