Is it Too Cold for Your Doodle? Temperature Guide & Tips for Cold Weather

Brrrr, winter brings cold days. Fortunately, your doodle has a thick coat to stay warm. Nevertheless, you should not underestimate extreme cold.

Discover the temperature guide for doodles and 4 tips to protect them from the cold.

Temperature guide for doodles

  • Above 0°C

Doodles are well-resistant to temperatures above freezing thanks to their insulating coat. This provides natural protection against the cold.

However, prolonged exposure to cold air is uncomfortable for your dog. Ensure regular indoor breaks and observe your dog for signs of cold, such as shivering or hesitation to stay outside.

  • 0°C to -10°C

While doodles have natural protection against the cold, it becomes riskier when the temperature drops below freezing. Especially older dogs, puppies, or dogs with health problems are more susceptible to cold weather.

A waterproof rain jacket can help keep the coat dry, which is important for insulation and heat retention. A dry coat retains heat better than a wet coat.

  • Below -10°C

Short walks are still possible, but observe your dog closely. Pay attention to signs of discomfort or hypothermia, such as trembling, chattering teeth, increased stiffness, or unwillingness to move.

4 tips to protect your dog from the cold

    1. Keep the fur around the paws short: This prevents snow or ice clumps from sticking to long hairs. This causes discomfort and wounds. Use safety scissors to trim the fur around the pads short.

If there are ice clumps on the paws, do not pull them. Gently squeeze them to melt.

    2. Blow-dry the coat: With a wet coat, your dog will have difficulty warming up. After walking, blow-dry your dog thoroughly with the pet dryer.

    3. Limit outdoor time: Staying active is good for maintaining blood circulation, but don't let your dog stay in the cold for too long.

    4. Ensure sufficient food & drink: Your dog uses more energy in the cold. Therefore, ensure sufficient food and fresh water.

    Extra tip for road salt

Is there road salt on the street? Then apply a layer of petroleum jelly to your dog's paw pads. This helps to protect the pads from irritation and inflammation.

    Ready to brave the cold?

With the above tips, you and your doodle are ready to enjoy the winter!
